A garden wall that marks your boundary and a retaining wall that holds back earth are two different jobs. Garden and boundary walls are mainly about appearance and privacy; a retaining wall carries the pressure of the soil and water behind it. We build stone walls, concrete walls, garden walls, retaining walls and boundary walls in natural stone, dressed stone, brick, concrete block and reinforced concrete.

The retaining wall mistake we see most often is missing drainage. Water building up behind a wall greatly increases the pressure on it, and the wall leans or collapses. On the sloping, often clay-rich land around Şile and Ağva, with its wet winters, this is a common problem. So behind every retaining wall we lay a drainage pipe and filter material, leave weep holes in the wall, and size the foundation and reinforcement to the wall height. A properly designed wall will stand for decades.

Wall Construction Process

First we look at the land: slope, soil type and water. For retaining walls a soil survey is carried out where needed, and the height, thickness and material are decided from it. The foundation trench is dug and a reinforced concrete footing is poured before the wall is built or cast.

Once the wall is up, pointing, render and waterproofing are applied. Behind retaining walls the backfill is compacted in layers and the drainage pipe is led from the base of the wall to a suitable outlet. The whole job is supervised by an engineer.
